Working to make Ottawa the most
Connected City
Since 1997, OCRI has envisioned Ottawa as a 'smart' city
— a place where information and communication technologies
would be applied in new ways to empower residents and institutions,
provide a competitive edge for business, and improve the quality
of life for all citizens.
To realize its vision, OCRI brought together more than 40
industry, government and community partners in the SmartCapital
initiative, a major initiative to accelerate the development
of online services for all sectors of the city.
Ottawa is now recognized as one of the world's most connected
cities, rapidly evolving as a centre of expertise and excellence
in the knowledge-based global economy. Home to more than 1,800
advanced-technology firms — which are responsible for
90 percent of Canada's telecommunications research —
Ottawa features an impressive optical, cable, DSL and high-speed
wireless network infrastructure. This infrastructure supports
not only companies, but more internet users per capita than
any other city in Canada. |
